Summer Singing Homework

Hi guys,

So I have asked you all to find 3 live videos with impressive backing vocals. I asked you to explain why you liked them and how they supported the lead vocal.

Aine Carroll has sent on 3 great videos. Check them out below and feel free to comment and let us know if you agree.
I want it that way- cover by Shoshana Beanhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6HtMqVRzQg
I think the backing vocalists are brilliant because I think they really stand out and their voices blend in so nice with the lead vocalist. They also have a lot in the song.

Problem/Regulate- Cover by Hozierhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nox3Oswbbk
I love the backing vocals here because firstly theyre not in the original song and there are a lot of them.

Trouble with my baby- Paloma Faithhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUGi1MnKocM
I love this because firstly I like how theyre all dressed the same, usually the backing vocalists would wear the same and the lead would wear something else but here its different. I also like the call and response in the chorus. I think without them it would be a bit boring, they bring it to life a bit more.

Have fun!

PART 2
Amy Brennan
Hi guys,

So you have done a great job on the homework for this week.
Here are some ideas from Amy Brennan:
Love On Top (Live) – Beyonce
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByLJstEo0fo
I think the backing vocals in this are really good because they’re subtle but add more substance to the song so it doesn’t seem as bare. They help to emphasise the important lines (especially in the chorus) when they sing the same line as Beyonce

Help (Live) – The Beatles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWP6Qki8mWc
I think the backing vocals are good because the harmonies are really tight and blend really well together. I really liked the higher register they used as well as it adds to the main hook, and they don’t overpower Lennon. They also help to put an emphasis on the the more important lines.

I Need Your Love (Live) – Pentatonix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=611cZlSiHh0
I’m not sure if this one counts since they technically aren’t background singers but I just think this is amazing! There are only 5 of them singing but they still make it sound rich and full. The harmonies are perfect and there’s just the right mix of direct harmonies on the melody line and bits to mimic instruments. Even though there’s a lot going on you can still hear the melody clearly through everything and all the layers of the backing blend really well.

Some ideas from Ben O’ Sullivan:

The Beatles- Day Tripper
I think it would be more difficult to find a Beatles song with no backing vocals than to find one with amazing ones, the backing vocals in this song add volume to it and add excitement. There’s also some fairly simple but really cool harmonies.

Noah and the whale- Rocks and Daggers
The vocals in this are very simple and for a lot of it there’s not much more than the lead singer but when there is backing vocals they are absolutely heavenly. In my opinion a really good example of minimalistic backing vocals adding so much to the song, especially from 3:45 onwards.

Empress Gladys & The Pips- Midnight train to Georgia
This is just class to be fair, the backing vocals here are just so unreal that I don’t need to explain it. And that choreography though, it’s the stuff of magic
